Records show the Bourke family established their undertaking business back in the mid 1800's and they located at 71 Queen Street in 1880. Our family run funeral directors has always traded as "Bourkes" or "Burkes" - the family used both spelling during the 1800's & is it not clear why they opted for the more unusual spelling of the name rather than the more typical "Burkes". The mantle was passed from within the Bourke family to a nephew, William Harmon, in the early 1900's. The tradition continued for the last century with the business being passed from father to son. In 2010, the business was passed from William (Billy) Harmon to his son, Alan Harmon. Alan has been working within the funeral business for the last 25 years.

Bourke's has always been more than just a business within the Smithfield area. Along side the local community we have lived and grown up there. We have witnessed the massive changes from a small residential suburb of Dublin to the active, modern area it is today.

Many of the original residents have left the area for more suburban parts of the city but retain their links to the area. They return to the old Church of St. Michan's on Halston Street or The Capuchin Church on Church Street to attend mass, baptisms, weddings and funerals. Or even to renew their motor tax at the new office on Queen Street. Many of these former residents drop in to us for a nostalgic chat about the area and the changes it has seen over the decades.
