The loss of a loved one is always a painful and stressful time and the idea of making funeral arrangements can be overwhelming. Our staff can help you by assisting in all aspects of the funeral, from start to finish. The arrangements for a funeral are not just about the person who has passed away, it is an opportunity for all of their family and friends to say their final farewell so it is important for each funeral to be unique and special. Please feel free to discuss any additional information which you feel will help to personalise the funeral to your family's needs, such as a special song, a request to pass by the house, favourite flowers or charity donations in lieu of flowers.

Below are some of the standard aspects of a funeral and some details of what services Bourkes can provide you with:

  • The initial paperwork following a death can be daunting. Bourkes provide assistance with death registration and medical permissions from hospitals and getting the medical forms signed for cremation where necessary.
  • We arrange for removal from hospital / nursing home/ house back to our funeral home where we can embalm in preparation for viewing back at our funeral home. We will discuss clothing and presentation suitable to your loved one.
  • Our large range of coffins ensures there is one to suit all budgets and we also provide environmentally friendly options, such as beautifully crafted willow coffins.
  • We make contact with the church to arrange funeral mass/service. We liaise on your behalf with the relevant cemetery or crematorium to make all necessary arrangements and to co-ordinate those within the funeral service. We can give you advice on options regarding different cemeteries or crematoria and as our records go back a long time, we may be able to assist you in locating details of grave plots.
  • When the funeral arrangements are made most people wish to put a notice in the papers or on the website and we will assist you with the wording to suit your needs and arrange for the obituary to be published.
  • There has been a return to the tradition of waking at home. Sometimes families would like someone to be waked at home for a night or just a few hours. This we can plan, advise and arrange with your family for whatever seems most suitable.
  • Our fleet can offer modern Mercedes hearses for funerals and a range of Mercedes limousines. However, many people opt to us their own cars so you may only require a hearse.
  • Quite often we are asked to provide music for a funeral. Depending on you preferences we can arrange singers, organists or harpists. We have compiled a list of suitable church music to give to a family to help them pick their music. Local churches have supplied us a selection of readings, psalms and reflections we will be happy to offer to you.
  • If you are not planning a church service we have information put together for civil or a non church service and we can discuss this with you and offer some structure for a suitable service.
  • Although a lot of families arrange their own flowers as it can be so personal. It can be an opportunity for someone in the family to contribute and feel part of arranging the funeral. However, should you wish us to look after the floral arrangements, we can provide all types of funeral flowers, wreaths, sprays, bouquets or church arrangements.
  • Bourkes ensures that an attendance book is always available at the funeral service for those attending the funeral to sign. Subsequently, we can arrange acknowledgements in the newspapers and the printing of memorial and thank you cards afterwards.
  • Some people prefer to discuss funeral plans in advance to seek general advice or specific information. We are always willing to discuss your queries or concerns and if required, we can keep specific requests on file.
